Ingredients
- 1 can tuna (in water or oil), drained well
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion or spring onion
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped celery (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices cheddar or mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened
Directions
- In a bowl, mix the tuna, mayonnaise, mustard, onion, celery, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- Lay out the 4 slices of bread on a clean surface.

- Place 2 slices of cheese over the tuna mixture on each sandwich.
- Top with the remaining bread slices to form 2 sandwiches.
- Spread the softened butter lightly over the outside of each sandwich.
- Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
- Remove from the pan, slice, and serve warm.
Serving & Storage
Serve the tuna melt warm with a simple green salad, sliced tomatoes, cucumber, or your favourite soup.
For best results, tuna melts are best eaten freshly cooked. Leftover tuna filling can be stored separately in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheating
Pan: Reheat the sandwich over low heat for a few minutes on each side until warm and crisp.
Air fryer: Reheat at 180°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes, checking until hot and crisp.
Tip: Avoid microwaving if possible, as the bread can become soft rather than crisp.
